The steakhouse was busy for a town that consisted of three thousand people. A couple sat in a corner, they lifted their heads as we walked in. I motioned to a table and inhaled the delicious smell from the kitchen “The porterhouse here is to die for. You want me to order for two?”

“Sounds good.”

I made for the counter, smiling as Benny whipped a hand towel over his shoulder and cut me a grin. “Those men of yours are nothing but trouble. Two of them cleared out the buffet, so from now on, all-you-can-eat is off-limits.”

“It’s ’cause they can’t cook, and there’s no way in hell I’m doing it for ’em. Those guys can eat a horse.”

Benny picked up the pen and notepad, chuckled, and shook his head. “Three kilos of potatoes in one damn sitting. I never seen anyone eat so much. Who’s your new friend?”

I turned my head to glance over my shoulder. Evander stared at a folded napkin and then turned to look out the window. “Evander Kane, he’s here to meet the senator.”

“Looks nice enough, although a little skinny for my taste.”

I turned back to a knowing smile. One shake of my head and Benny’s lips curled to a grin. “Lord above, don’t let me stop you. Those soulful eyes and those lips. Mmm. You best hold onto him tight.”

“It’s not like that,” I muttered.

Benny leaned over the counter. “First time I ever smelled anything other than gun oil on you.” He gave me a wink then turned and called over his shoulder. “Two porterhouses coming right up lovelies.”

I snapped my mouth shut and turned away—arguing with Benny would only get you a burned steak, and dry, old peas.”

Evander glanced my way as I dropped into my seat. One brow was raised as he whispered. “Soulful eyes?”

“You heard that, huh?”

He never answered, only rearranged the salt and peppershakers and waited.

“Just say it, ask me whatever it is that’s been on your mind. I’m an open book.”

“Your fiancé.”

“Ex-fiancé,” I corrected. I should’ve known this was coming.

“It’s Ace, isn’t it? That’s why he was pissed about me staying.”

I slipped my hand over my mouth, still a tortured sound escaped. “Ace? God no, that man is hell on wheels. I love them, I really do, but to be in love with a man like that, it’d take more strength than I have.” I glanced out the window at the empty streets. “Kurt was my Master Sergeant. Our relationship started well before he was promoted. It wasn’t something I planned, it just kind of happened. Everything was so intense in the Marines—induction, training, drills—and when you’re out there, and it’s just you and the guy at your back, you lose perspective. I guess that’s what makes his betrayal hardest of all.”

“He…cheated on you?”

I flinched at the savage tone and lifted my head. Evander’s lips were curled, white teeth shone.

“No, nothing like that. Hell, if he’d been with another woman I could laugh and wipe my hands of the spineless sonofabitch. No, it wasn’t anything so—common.
